SANE Testimony in Child Sex Abuse Cases:Â Shedding Light, Dispelling Myths for Justice
Sexual Assault Nurse Examination (SANE) is arelatively young discipline that has served asoneof the biggest leaps in criminal justiceand the proper treatment of victim survivorsin decades. In recent years, certification for SANEs has grown to include a specialty inpediatric examinations as well, allowing for aformal designation for SANEs specifically recognized as experts in conducting examson children. This development is especiallycrucial given that incidences of child sexualassault in particular are often underreported, and even reported cases often don’tgetcharged or tried by prosecutors lacking inevidence to prove the allegations. A 2007 study indicates that Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) programs are having an impact, however, and raising prosecution rates wherethey are implemented.
